Contributing to Development
Bujagali Energy Limited has produced substantial benefits for the Ugandan national economy and local communities near the site. In addition to direct benefits; new jobs, lower electricity costs, reliable power, the project has stimulated increased economic activity, producing important “macro” benefits for Uganda.
The project’s principal macro benefits for Uganda include: New supply of clean, reliable energy, Eliminate government subsidies for power production, Reduced electricity rationing, Increase in economic investment and national income, Reduced trade deficit and need to import oil products, Support for rural electrification programs, and Income from the sale of carbon credits.

The project was successfully registered by the UNFCCI under the Clean Development Mechanism on 29th December 2011.
The verification established that the monitoring system complied with CDM thereby securing the credibility therefore allowing the issuance of Carbon Emission Reductions. Once issued the CERs are retained in a CDM registry account and are traded via the EU Emissions trading system. The registered participants are Bujagali Energy Ltd and Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development.
