Social Responsibility

BEL proudly serves several villages and the surrounding host communities and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is at the core of our business. At BEL, CSR is part of our commitment to establishing sustainable communities. Following are key focus areas we have worked to improve our communities namely; Environmental Sustainability, Education, Health, and Livelihood Development.

Projects we are involved in

BEL Scholarship

The BEL Scholarship Program was launched in May 2015 with the main aim of providing financial assistance to academically bright but financially needy students from the Bujagali project affected communities to pursue tertiary education. The scholarship caters for the full tuition, accommodation and living allowances of the beneficiaries during the course of their studies. To date BEL has granted 12 scholarships to successful students from the project area.

Promotion of sports in schools

BEL recognizes that sports play a key role in terms of promoting health and wellbeing, as well as supporting cohesion and development initiatives among communities. We promote sports in schools through donation of sports kits and equipment to schools within our area of operation.

Education Infrastructure improvement

A clean and safe environment is not only important but also necessary for children to succeed in their education. With this in mind, BEL supports schools in the community through renovation of dilapidated classrooms.

Wakisi Roman Catholic Primary School, a beneficiary of the programme, with over 300 pupils benefited through the renovation of its 2-classroom and the teachers office. The classroom had leaking roofs, cracked walls and the children had resorted to attending lessons under the tree.

Educational tours

BEL provides guided tours through the dam during weekdays. Come and enjoy a breathtaking view of the Bujagali Dam at no cost. The tour is open to individuals, group of people, students at local, national, regional and international levels.

Healthcare

Healthcare is a basic right for all. Through our bi-annual medical camps, BEL’s healthcare program provides the community free healthcare services These medical camps enhance access to overall physical examinations which include eyes and health check-up, dental hygiene check-up, assessment of the functioning of vital organs like the heart, lungs, digestive system, and the immune system. To date over 1700 community members have benefited from the camps.

Sustainable Fishing

We work with local partners to support and promote sustainable fishing as well as enhancing the livelihoods of the fishers within the Bujagali area in the East and West Banks. BEL sources quality fishnets from Uganda Fishnet Manufacturers that produces legally recommended net sizes to maximise catch of mature fishes while preserving fish stocks. This promotes the ecological balance and ensures long term sustainability of fisheries resources.
