Environmental Responsibility

At Bujagali Energy Limited, we take environmental stewardship seriously. We fully appreciate the importance of the Victoria Nile River and its environs as an invaluable natural resource. That’s why we’re committed to preserving and enhancing the area near the hydropower project for current and future generations.

The following highlights some of BEL’s environmental mitigation and monitoring measures:

Alternative Water Supplies

Groundwater wells, piped city water, etc for villages.

Native Vegetation

Extensive native vegetation planted on islands and riverbanks in the Bujagali reservoir and downstream.

Alien Species

Implementation of an invasive alien species plan.

Water Quality

Routine water quality monitoring.

Reduced Carbon dioxide Emissions

Bujagali reduces carbon dioxide emissions in Uganda by 1 million tons per annum.  The project replaced the diesel and fuel oil electricity and hence reduce CO2 emissions that contribute to climate change.

Fish Stocks

Routine monitoring of fish stocks in the reservoir and the downstream river.

Rafting Enterprises

Coordination with rafting enterprises for alternative raft launching and exit facilities and other new tourism opportunities such as river cruises.

Tourism Facilities

New tourism facilities in the Bujagali area (cultural heritage facilities, dam visitors center, picnic site, etc.)

Shoreline Management

Implementation of shoreline management plan.
