Bujagali Energy Limited cares about the health of the people within and around the project area communities. Access to medical services vary between these communities due to a number of factors including low income among households.

In May 2023, Bujagali Energy Limited collaborated with TASO and Budondo health centre (iv) for three-day medical camp providing services for dental, eye care, safe male medical circumcision, blood donation, cervical cancer screening and other general medical services to thousands of people from the project area communities.

Student Apprenticeship Program

With the increasing number of Hydro power plants in Uganda, there’s a potential for demand of skilled labor force. In June 2023, Bujagali Energy Limited launched its annual student apprenticeship program at Nile Vocational Institute aligned with internship opportunities to compliment the students’ classroom knowledge with practical trainings.

In response to the needs of Hydro power generation industry, Bujagali Energy Limited provides trainings on Fundamentals of Hydro generator and electrical power plants, generator systems, plant instruments, power transformers, switch yard and substation station equipment, Electrical drawing concepts and management of workplace safety.

At Bujagali Energy Limited, Environmental protection is an integral part of the company’s cooperate initiatives. On 5^th May 2023, Bujagali Energy Limited joined the rest of the world to celebrate the International Environment Day under the theme “beating plastics” This is practiced through waste segregation within the Bujagali Hydropower plant.

Additionally, the annual tree planting efforts were exhibited as staff planted indigenous tree species within the dam area while fruit trees were planted by the project area communities for resilient and sustainable livelihoods.

Agriculture as a Social Enterprise

Agriculture is the mainstay of the county’s economy. Our social enterprise supports farmers with quality agricultural inputs, especially quality seeds, free land access for farming and Agroforestry, trainings on Improved Agronomic practices and appropriate technologies to enhance production and reduce post-harvest losses. A Community Farmer Field school was set up to support knowledge transfer on improved agricultural production.

“Road Safety starts with Me”

A United Nations Special report indicated that in Uganda at least 10 people die daily from Boda-Boda related accidents that may be avoided. It is unfortunate that families spend their entire savings on medical treatment for the causalities.

Bujagali Energy Limited in conjunction with SA logistics organizes annual road safety educational trainings for the boda-boda riders within the project Affected areas. This aims at providing access to knowledge and skills on basic mechanics, road signages, basic first aid and distribution of safety riding gears.

The program encourages the riders to adhere to good road safety standards which helps minimize boda-boda accidents.

Empowering youths through vocational skills for self-reliance

Bujagali Energy Limited launched a five-year (2023-2027) community investment program titled “Vocational scholarship”.

The overall objective is to equip youths with hands on skills for self-employment. The program seeks to expand employment opportunities to hundreds of youths from Bujagali Energy Ltd’s project affected areas through access to skills and knowledge directly responsive to market demands.

In March 2023, a total of 10 students were granted scholarship opportunities at Jinja Vocational Training Institute.

The program also indirectly contributes to inclusive economic growth by engaging marginalized youth, with particular focus on girls, in the project affected villages of Bujagali Hydro power plant.

Community wellness

“Malaria prevention starts with me and my mosquito net” It’s not OK that children are dying from malaria. It’s not OK that families are spending their entire income on medical services coupled with limited access to quality healthcare where they live.

Bujagali Energy Limited collaborates with community health centers within and around the project area to promote health among children and families through educational trainings on malaria prevention by the Village Health Team. This is implemented through providing access to mosquito nets, and provision of clean water sources as measures to keep the communities healthy and safe.

Celebrating 60 Years of Uganda Independence

The Bujagali Hydropower Project consists of 250MW run-of-river hydro power on the Victoria Nile, at Dumbbell Island.

When commissioned on 1st August of 2012, Bujagali became the largest hydropower generation facility in Uganda and nearly doubled Uganda’s peak electricity supply, eliminated daily load-shedding and provided a reliable solution to meet the country’s increasing power demand.

The 250MW plant currently contributes up to 34% of Uganda’s effective energy capacity, setting a unique precedent for Public-Private Partnerships in the region.

The BHPP consists of a facility that houses the 5×50 Mw Kaplan turbines with an associated 28 meters high earth-filled dam and spillway works. These turbines have been generating power at a 99% availability rate since 2012.

Amidst challenges in school, Bujagali Energy Limited makes my dream possible

The demand for science graduates continues to grow with the economy, yet the failure rate amongst science subjects continues unhindered, with worse subject being biology. To persuade and interest students to the science domain, Bujagali Energy Limited established a school mentorship program as a career guidance movement in line with Bujagali Energy project area student scholarship aimed at supporting and encouraging science students achieve qualification in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math to match the national labour market demands.

Students enjoy the annual School mentorship program organised by Bujagali Energy Limited that supports project community schools with science reading materials and laboratory equipment.

Before BEL’s interventions, I had limited access to science textbooks that negatively impacted on my scores in Biology, physics, and Chemistry. I am so happy for the improved performances in sciences after receiving science textbooks from Bujagali Energy Limited.

With a rich, school science library, I confidently see my dream of becoming a civil Engineer possible. “Says Namugwanya Rebecca”

Saving for a purpose!

My name is Mukasa Fred James, a resident of Kyabirwa village, Jinja district. My quality of life changed after joining Kyabirwa Village Saving Loans Association group supported by Bujagali Energy Limited. After receiving trainings on saving and loaning, I was able to acquire investment capital of Ugx 200,000 from my saving group from which I bought two piglets.

I am looking forward to expanding my farm to a piggery Demonstration group.
