Bujagali Energy Limited in conjunction with SA logistics organizes annual road safety educational trainings for the boda-boda riders within the project Affected areas. This aims at providing access to knowledge and skills on basic mechanics, road signages, basic first aid and distribution of safety riding gears.

The program encourages the riders to adhere to good road safety standards which helps minimize boda-boda accidents.

The overall objective is to equip youths with hands on skills for self-employment. The program seeks to expand employment opportunities to hundreds of youths from Bujagali Energy Ltd’s project affected areas through access to skills and knowledge directly responsive to market demands.

In March 2023, a total of 10 students were granted scholarship opportunities at Jinja Vocational Training Institute.

The program also indirectly contributes to inclusive economic growth by engaging marginalized youth, with particular focus on girls, in the project affected villages of Bujagali Hydro power plant.

Students enjoy the annual School mentorship program organised by Bujagali Energy Limited that supports project community schools with science reading materials and laboratory equipment.

Before BEL’s interventions, I had limited access to science textbooks that negatively impacted on my scores in Biology, physics, and Chemistry. I am so happy for the improved performances in sciences after receiving science textbooks from Bujagali Energy Limited.

Pursuing Mechanical engineering had always been a life-long dream for Ritah. However, coming from a family that could barely afford her university fees, this dream seemed more of an illusion, until she got an opportunity to be part of the Bujagali Energy Limited (BEL) scholarship program in 2016.

‘‘I dared to dream, and BEL’s sponsorship ensured that this dream became a reality.  The company paid for my university fee from 2016 to 2018, it also provided me with an attachment opportunity before my graduation, whose recommendation secured me an internship at Isimba Hydroelectric Plant.  I worked as a Machine operator at Uganda printing and publishing cooperation from September 2020 to July 2021. Currently, am working as a plant shift operator for Frontier Energy at Nyamagasani 1, Ruwenzori hydropower plant in Kasese district.’’ Says Ritah Nadunga.

According to Ritah, looking back in 2015 when she had just completed secondary school, she had no hope of joining a university because her family could not afford it. His father had many wives resulting in many children who were not easy to manage. Her mother struggled to pay for her fee in both primary and secondary school. By the time she completed her senior 6, her mother had accumulated unpaid loans.

With her position at Frontier energy, she can now provide for her siblings and parents. She also has a goal of ensuring that all her siblings get a chance to go the University and pursue careers of their choice.

Bujagali 2021 Scholarship recipients

The process of identifying the potential BEL scholarship beneficiaries for academic year 2017/2018 started in Mid-July 2017. There were eight (8) applicants including three females and five males. Only one applicant resides in the East Bank (Budondo Sub-County) whereas the rest of the applicants are residents on the West Bank (Wakisi Sub-County).
